The American Shorthair
Registered as the American Shorthair in 1966; previously known as the Shorthair or Domestic Shorthair. Probably the original "American" cat, possibly arriving on the Mayflower where they earned their passage as "ratters" It has a short, thick coat developed because of their penchant for the outdoors. A muscular body, round face, medium ears, and eyes whose color depend on the color of its coat. Low maintenance. Long life spans (15-20 years).

- SIZE: Medium to large (8 to 15 pounds)
- TEMPERAMENT: Gentle and playful. Good with children. Undemanding.
- COLORS: Solid(self): Black, white. Tabby: red classic, brown classic, cream classic, silver classic, brown patched, red/white van, cream mackerel, blue mackerel. Calico dilute. Tortie: blue-cream. Shaded: chocolate and silver.
