Prevention of Fleas for Your Pets

Fleas are very difficult creatures. They are hard to see and often very irritating to both the dog and owner. The question is how you keep fleas from ever entering your home in the first place or getting on your dog. Dogs attract fleas from several different places, and you will find that the summer months are particularly difficult, as fleas tend to run rampant. Warmer climates also seem to attract more fleas than one would like. The answer, however is not keeping the dog locked inside or to avoid certain situations. Instead, you have to take measures for flea prevention.

Ways to Prevent Fleas on Your Dog

There are several flea prevention medications on the market today. You have to find the one that works the best and does not create a problem with the dog. Some dogs are highly sensitive to the medications and can have allergic reactions. In this case, you may have to try a few different flea brands. You will also find an insect growth regulator is very important. This is a device that can be in liquid or pill form. It renders the flea incapable of spreading. You will find that applying this about every six months will help you prevent the fleas from ever landing.

You can also use other products that will kill the fleas once the dog actually contracts them. It can make it hard to get rid of the fleas in your home. Therefore, you will also have to bug bomb the home while the dog and children are not present. Pay special attention to prime spots where your dog sleeps like furniture or dog beds.Your best method for flea issues is going to be prevention. Keep the dog away from ponds during the summer; keep them away from dense bushes and other areas where high flea populations inhabit. You will also find that a bath may be warranted as well as grooming before applying the flea killer.

As long as you realize a clean home, a clean dog, and medications for prevention exist, you should never have a flea problem with your pet. You will find that there are several different methods for prevention and your vet may recommend a few of those to you.
