Some Common Health Problems with Dogs.

Health problems that plague humans during their time on earth often plague their pets in a different degree. Many pet owners are unaware of any hereditary problems associated with their dog's breed without the proper research. The Alaskan malamute often suffers from epilepsy as a result of hereditary issues. Many breeds have different health issues, the owner is encouraged to research their breed, provide regular doctor visits and provide the proper preventative steps to ensure the health of their dog.

Puppies are as susceptible to illnesses as a human infant. Illnesses that plague many breeds are distemper and canine parvovirus or CPV. Over 80 percent of the cases are fatal if gone untreated. Owners are urged to ensure their puppy does not suffer from any of these illnesses through the proper steps provided by a veterinary professional. Often shots are given the puppy to prevent the contraction of many common illnesses. Ensure the shots for your puppy or dog are current.

The virus called Distemper is contagious and is considered the largest disease threat to dog population's world wide. Catching this virus is very easy for puppies because of their weak immune systems. The vulnerability too many illnesses can have a fatal result, distemper accounts for over 80 percent of fatal deaths among puppies. Owners able to provide care for their puppies and assist in recovery find the puppy will survive with damage to their nervous system and partial or total paralysis. This disease can lead to threats to the puppy's life such as pneumonia.

A great way to check to health status of your dog at home is to check the eyes of you dog. If you dog's eyes have a discharge, pus or seem foggy it is recommended to take your in for emergency care immediately. Twitching or paralysis can also be telling tale signs of an infection or illness. Owners are urged to report any changes in the demeanor or temperament of their puppy immediately upon arriving at the emergency care facility.

CPV is a contagious viral disease that attacks white blood cells. Dogs coming in contact with other dogs with the disease can contract this illness. The tell tale signs are often left in the feces of the dog and is often transferred through the consumption of the feces of an infected dog. Signs of CPV may include appetite loss, depression, diarrhea and vomiting. If the dog has encountered this disease, the owner may notice blood streaks in the discharge of their pet and will need to take their dog to an emergency facility immediately.

Ensuring your puppy or dog's health is as simple as keeping up with all veterinary visits. Owners are encouraged to seek medical attention if their dog suffers from any of the mentioned symptoms.
