Often mistaken for a small Greyhound the Whippet is a breed all to its own. Slightly smaller and a little slower than the Greyhound the Whippet is a fine, loyal and playful companion. They do well with children if the children are not abusive or rough. After the initial "greeting" by a Whippet of its owner's arrival back home they settle back into a calm existence. While they see cats and other non-canine pets as "game", they interact well with other dogs. The Whippet is a runner and should be given the opportunity to run free in a safe enclosure. Apartment Whippets will need to be taken on a daily and vigorous walk. When not in a controlled area they should be leashed as they will chase (and kill) smaller animals. They are easy to groom and have little to no doggie odor.

We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet stores and Internet sellers may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.

Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site.
