The Polish Lowland Sheepdog, or Polish Owczarek Nizinny commonly referred as a PON, gained full AKC acceptance on August 1, 2001, its 147th breed. The PON needs early training and on through their second year. Mature dogs are quiet at home, need some exercise every day, and are wonderful in any environment including apartment and city living. Males are better with younger children and changing situations and environments. Females are wonderful for older generations or families without young children. The females are more protective as they are the keepers of the breed. The PONs love water. They love other animals if introduced to them at less than two years of age. They get along with other pets in a family, but tend to be dominant with other dogs. They will always be first. Smart almost to a fault. They can be clipped so that grooming is minimal. Only bathe twice a year unless needed for unusual situations. The PON is non-shedding and hypo-allergenic. (This description was sent to us from Linda Bailey at Kennebec PONS of Maine.
