Choosing The Right Breeder

Knowledge of the breed is the best way to have confidence when visiting a breeder. Ask questions and let the breeder know you are serious and knowledgeable of the breed.

On your visit consider the following:

oTake a good look around. Have a list. Observe if the dogs are active and their kennels are clean. Do the dogs look healthy? How is the dam behaving? Are the other dogs well tempered?

o Talk to the breeders. Is he or she showing more interest in the dogs than you? Do they ask you questions about your lifestyle, expectations, interests in the breed? The more interest and concern for the well being of the dogs they show the better quality of breeder.

o Does the breeder want to visit the dogs potential home? Does the breeder want a follow up visit or keep contact with you?

o Will the breeder make you wait to receiver your new puppy?

o Does the breeder ask for references from your vets office or other people?

o What kind of contract does the breeder have? Is it a clear document explaining all of the terms?

o Does the breeder place any restrictions on you purchasing the dog?

o Can your breeder confirm the pedigree of the parents of each litter?

If your breeder is able to clearly answer your questions, seems knowledgeable of the breeds, and can put you at ease. You have found your breeder! Some breeders will not let you get your puppy right away. Trust the breeder to give the dog up when it is ready.
