The Karelian Bear Dog has a good sense of humor and is sensitive, independent, intelligent, skillful, and energetic. This dog is very loyal and protective to its owner's family and makes a good household companion when it is extensively trained. This is not a breed for the casual pet owner, but for an owner who is able to become and remain the "Alpha". They love people and receive friend and visitor alike but are very protective of their family. They love to be loved. With proper early training and socialization they can live with other family pets. This is a high-energy dog dog who needs room to run, and a rural setting is more appropriate than urban. Daily exercise of at least an hour is required. Off-lease or unconfined it may decide to go hunting. No doggie odor or bad breath (properly fed) and sheds twice a year.
