The Irish Terrier

Terrier Group

Casey and Prudence from the Diamond Irish Kennels

The majestic, entertaining Irish Terrier. Extremely loyal to its family and good with children. Very protective if it senses its family is threatened. Hot-tempered in its four-legged society: can be aggressive with other dogs, and definitely not compatible with pets other than dogs. A happy digger that needs to be exercised. Is OK for apartments as long as it gets plenty of exercise. Keep close control on public walks to make sure it doesn't get pugilistic upon meeting other dogs. Needs to be in a controlled outside environment if off leash. Shedding is not a big issue with the Irish Terrier. Brush on a regular basis.

Wiry. Seldom sheds. Minimal OK for apartment with plenty of exercise. Not good with non-dog pets. Can be a handful.

Book Suggestions

We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.

If you would like help locating a breeder or rescue agency near you please E-Mail PGAA ( ita408@comcast.net), and let us know your city/state and the type of dog you are looking for. Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site. Do your own check of each breeder or rescue -- be sure that you are comfortable with the organization before you buy, adopt or turn-over a dog.
