The breed comes in three sizes: Toy (12 inches), Miniature (12-15 inches), and Standard (15-19 inches). Whatever the size "Eskies", as they are called, are derived from cross-breeding with other Nordic dogs. Like all their Arctic cousins, the American Eskimo Dog has a double-coat once needed for protection in the coldest weather. They are extremely energetic, alert, loyal, and very trainable, whether for simple companionship, obedence, or agility. Eskies, as the name implies, love the snow and the cold. Once known as the German, or American, Spitz. They are good house pets and watch dogs. You can reach the American Eskimo Dog Club of America by writing the Corresponding Secretary, Barbara E. Book Suggestions
We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.
If you would like help locating a breeder or rescue agency near you please E-Mail PGAA ( ita408@comcast.net), and let us know your city/state and the type of dog you are looking for. Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site. Do your own check of each breeder or rescue -- be sure that you are comfortable with the organization before you buy, adopt or turn-over a dog. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
