Canine Herbal Magic

Alternative medicine has become part of treating dog health issues. There are many different types from which to choose. These include such things as:

* Acupressure
* Acupuncture
* Aromatherapy
* Homeopathy
* Hydrotherapy
* Reiki

One popular method is the use of herbs - herbalism. A skilled professional herbalist will advise the dog owner in the use of certain plants - herbs, for the treatment of certain medical and non-medical issues as well as to help improve health.

Commonly Prescribed Herbs

Several herbs are commonly prescribed to help improve the health of your dogs. The list includes:

* Valerian - This aromatic plant is a sedative. It acts to lower the blood pressure, reduce gas and decrease epileptic episodes. The most common use of Valerian, however, is to reduce anxiety. Many dog owners give their canines valerian to calm them down. It is helpful for dogs who are stressful over such things as thunderstorms, airplane flights, long trips and other events. Valerian performs these tasks gently. Make sure you talk to your vet to see if valerian is right for your pet. Always follow the recommended dosage. Check to see if it is counterproductive or even harmful when taken in conjunction with other drugs.

* Skullcap - Formerly known as "mad dog weed," this plant, like valerian, acts to soothe the nerves. Recommended uses include for excitable or nervous animals. You may also use skullcap if your dog suffers from hyperlipedema. The most common use of skullcap, however, is to treat a severe form of epilepsy - La Grand Mal. Treatment in this case, involves small doses. This helps to calm down the dog while maintaining constant motor and sensory skills. Never give skullcap without talking to your veterinarian about the possible side effects. Prolonged and/or excessive use of this herb can result in damage to the liver.

* Hawthorn - This herbal aid is taken to improve the flow of coronary blood. Hawthorn is for dog's with heart problems. It ensures the blood pressure is kept even while it works to strengthen the dog's heartbeat.

* Garlic - Yes, Garlic is a herbal treatment. An antibacterial plant, it also acts to lower the blood pressure and stimulate the immune system. The plant is recommended for canines with heart conditions and those with compromised immune systems

* Gingko - is another herbal heart medication. Taking this is to help dilate the blood vessels

* Dandelion Leaf - The root of this plant acts as a mild diuretic, the leaf has anti-inflammatory powers

* Eucalyptus Oil - If your dog has respiratory problems, add a few drops of this plant's oil to a water base and add to a vaporizer in the kennel or dog's room. It will help address various breathing issues.

Conclusion

Herbalism is a means of treating your animal's problems naturally. Do not assume, however, any herb is safe for your canine. Always talk to your veterinarian before you use. Moreover, herbs are not cures for serious illnesses. While they may help in the treatment, they are not a guaranteed cure.
