As all other Bulldogs, the original job of the Staffordshire Terrier was baiting bulls. The ideal was to combine the spirit and agility of the Terrier with the courage and tenacity of the Bulldog. The crossings between these breeds resulted in a dog referred to as Bull and Terrier Dog; the Half and Half; and, Pit Bull. As the breed moved to America the names Pitdog and Pitbull Terrier stuck. However, American breeders wanted an animal heavier than the British breed, hence the name American Staffordshire Terrier. This is the breed commonly referred to a Pit Bull.
As all terriers, the American Staffordsire Terrier is quick, alert, and high strung. They make excellent guard dogs and protectors of property. Their strength and courage should not be questioned. Owners of an American Staffordshire Terrier need to be firm and consistent in a training program beginning at an early age and continued throughout the life of the dog to ensure appropriate behavior around small children and other animals. It is not unusual for American Staffordshire Terriers to "disagree" with other dogs. Care and caution are the catch words for owners of this breed.
According to the American Kennel Club standards the American Staffordshire Terrier should give the impression of great strength for his size; a well put together dog, muscular, agile and keenly alive to his surrounding. His courage is proverbial. The dog can easily discriminate between strangers who mean well and those who do not.
The head has a broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles. The muzzle is of medium length rounded on the upper side to fall away abruptly below the eyes. The jaw is well defined; underjaw should be strong with biting power with upper teeth meeting tightly outside lower teeth in front.
