The breed comes in three sizes: Toy (12 inches), Miniature (12-15 inches), and Standard (15-19 inches). Whatever the size "Eskies", as they are called, are derived from cross-breeding with other Nordic dogs. Like all their Arctic cousins, the American Eskimo Dog has a double-coat once needed for protection in the coldest weather. They are extremely energetic, alert, loyal, and very trainable, whether for simple companionship, obedence, or agility. Eskies, as the name implies, love the snow and the cold. Once known as the German, or American, Spitz. They are good house pets and watch dogs.
