The Pyrenean Shepherd is vigilant and alert and seldom misses out on what is going on. The "Pyr Shep" is a rare breed in America, but in his traditional homeland of France his popularity as a wonderfully devoted family companion has grown considerably since the early 1970s. He likes to be involved, and his devoted and obedient nature make it possible for him to be included in all family activities or dog performance events. Herding and rescue work, agility, flyball, tracking, protection and obedience trials are some of the areas in which he excels. He can also possess a mischievous streak which will keep his owners on their toes if they want to remain one step ahead of him! Suspicious of strangers by nature, early, extensive socialization will convince him that strangers are no threat to him or his family unit. He enjoys the company of other dogs within the family unit, if for no other reason than to boss them around. Outside of the family unit he gives off an air of snobbery seeing no good reason to make extended canine friends. These personality characteristics go back to the secluded life the breed lived in the Pyrenees Mountains where strangers and other animals were viewed as potential trouble in the form of poachers or predators. We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.
