Watch Over Your Pets

Where you aware that more dogs are deserted during the warm summer months than any other season of the year?

Many families pick up a puppy or two for their kids to play with during their vacation at the beach or during a camping trip, and dump it on the way home. In Long Island, New York and New Jersey, there are more strays have been found than usual after the heated summer months.

Trying desperately to find a home to live in for the strays and puppies is a never-ending battle for humane organizations. Some animal shelters feature a column in the local papers with photos and information on the animals. Many times a cute photo is all that is needed to spark interest, although many people who adopt a dog on the spur of the moment is of no assistance at all. Then it's only a matter of time before the dog is returned to the shelter

.

Many animals are brought back only after a few days because they "do not bark when a stranger comes to the house". Several people don't understand that it takes time. It takes about two weeks for a dog to establish ownership and a sense of belonging. The dog then barks to protect something of his whether it's a home and a family member.

Often times a house burglary will send many folks to the local SPCA for a watchdog that ends up on a 6'ft chain, throughout the day and night. As a result, several SPCAs make house checks to see if there are adequate facilities before permitting one of the larger breeds to actually be adopted.

Even though euthanasia is believed to be the worst thing that could happen to an animal, it is actually one of the best. Laboratories from across the nation are searching for animals on which to experiment. Several hours, days, and months of torture undergone by animals during experiments could never be compared with the conclusiveness and serenity of euthanasia.

Dog-nappers are considered a continuous threat to family pets; also supply several labs with vivisection subjects. And other lab sources are those who actually place ads in local newspapers saying …"Wanted to sell your unwanted puppies". These are also several of the same folks that answer the ads that say …"Free to a great home."

The SPCA recommends making certain that your dogs don't wind up on an experiment table by checking on their new homes prior to allowing them to be taken away. Regrettably, SPCAs in some states aren't allowed to refuse to sell unlicensed, unclaimed dogs after 48 hours and licensed, unclaimed dogs after two weeks to laboratories.

One way to protect family pets is to keep them from wandering off and to place ID tags on them so they can be identified if they ever get lost. Care and concern for our pets will help prevent suffering, confusion and unhappiness experienced by too many a family's best friends.
