The Kooikerhondje, or Kooiker, originates in The Netherlands and is quite popular in Europe while extremely rare in the US. It is a small breed that was originally used to decoy ducks with its bushy tail. As a family dog the Kooiker needs to be trained early and socialized for a family life. The Kooiker is good with children but better with an older child, and will live with other pets if socialized with them as a puppy. As a watch dog they will become noisy when confronted with the unusual. It is best suited for a rural environment with plenty of room to run. Left under-exercised they have a tendency to gain weight. The Kooiker is an intelligent breed and its tendency to want to "do its job" needs to be replaced with other stimulation such as agility or obedience training and competition. It needs and enjoys both physical and mental exercise. The Kooiker sheds but this can be controlled with regular brushed. The Kooiker is not a stay at home apartment breed.
