The Canaan Dog is an excellent herder rare to America (in a recent 4 year period less than 800 Canaan Dogs were registered with the AKC out of a total of 5.9 million). They are loyal to their family and do well when raised with other pets. They are alert to strangers, and defensive of their territory. They should be well trained and socialized during puppyhood. Their coat protects them from temperature extremes, and they can be apartment dwellers if exercised. Clean with no doggie odor, and requires minimal grooming (weekly brushing). The Canaan is actually an energy conserving dog making him closer to a medium activity level breed rather than high. That being said, they are very capable of high activity levels. They shed heavily in season.

Book Suggestions
We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.
If you would like help locating a breeder or rescue agency near you please E-Mail PGAA ( ita408@comcast.net), and let us know your city/state and the type of dog you are looking for. Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site. Do your own check of each breeder or rescue -- be sure that you are comfortable with the organization before you buy, adopt or turn-over a dog. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
