The Australian Shepherd "Aussie" is a dog who wants to work! So, if you're not down on the farm with nothing to herd, you will need to find other work to keep your Aussie from looking for trouble - agility training and competition, obedience training and competition, etc. Because of their inbred instincts they will want to be the dominant family member, 2 or 4 legged. Firm and consistent handling is necessary. The Aussie will need a regular workout to satisfy its need for exercise. A simple walk will not work for a younger dog. A well socialized Aussie can make a great family dog as long as the aforementioned considerations are met. They are good with children eventho' they will have a tendency to herd them. Let the breeder know your intentions for the dog so they can select a puppy who's temperament best fits your desires. They are not recommended for apartment living. Only needs occasional brushing.

We STRONGLY recommend that you get your dog from a respectable breeder or rescue organization. Pet store puppies may get their dogs from Puppy Mills that normally breed only for profit, not quality or concern for the puppy or its eventual owner.
If you would like help locating a breeder or rescue agency near you please E-Mail PGAA ( ita408@comcast.net), and let us know your city/state and the type of dog you are looking for. Do not assume that PGAA has qualified all of the breeders or rescues on this site. Do your own check of each breeder or rescue -- be sure that you are comfortable with the organization before you buy, adopt or turn-over a dog. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
